Ode to the Moon

moonhanger moonhanger
how do you hang your moon
how many bottles of rubber cement
and plastic colored push-pins do you have to use

are you as tall as my tree house
that sits on the highest tree limb
such strongness and gracefulness you must use
like my kite floating on the wind

your moon like my night light
is just enough light to help me sleep
a gazillion batteries help it shine
until the night and day meet

then you're kind to let your friend - the sun
come out and have its way
with its boldness and brightness
to shine throughout the day

i admit i get excited
when he comes to bring enough light so i can play
but sometimes he seems so flashy
i hurt my eyes when i look his way

aaah! but before too long
and at just the right time
your moon takes his place
he knows just where to shine

he seems so quiet and gentle
as he does the job you've given
you always hang him where i can see him
you must have known that we were friends

so once again i come to the close of another day
i hope for a good night and for sweet dreams i pray
as i lay my head on my pillow
i'm sure i'll be asleep soon
because i look out my window
i see him and he sees me
as i wave goodnight to mr. moon
